Industrial Facility Wide UPS for Large Applications
Facilities requiring entire service entrance pickup, or Facility Wide Outage Protection with an Industrial UPS can use the PCS 100 UPS-1 to solve just that problem. Entire critical load centers can be combined for ultimate protection and runtime against all sags and complete power outages. Runtimes are variable to customer requirements for time to shut down equipment and save processes, or provide the cutover time to a generator backup solution.
The PCS100 UPS-I is a high performance, high efficiency UPS system that ensures protection from power quality events, such as deep sags or short-term outages, enabling continuous power supply to modern industrial processes. The PCS100 UPS-I uses a modular energy storage and inverter system to supply continuous power during utility events. The PCS100 UPS-I provides flexibility in the choice of energy storage, ultracapacitors or batteries to achieve the desired runtime solution.
UPS-1 vs Traditional UPS
Plant Facilities using large industrial devices that have high inrush currents cannot be supported by a traditional UPS designed for Data Center applications. Customers seeking a Correction device with runtime to correct more than sags and voltage, need to seek out a Industrial Designed System to withstand the constant current variations and inrush properties of a Process Plant, Factory, or high amperage draw machinery.
Runtime and Generator Applications
Battery systems can deliver autonomy for specified runtime duration. Ultracapacitors provide seconds of protection for short power quality events, which are the most common power quality problems around the world. Ultracapacitors have extremely high power density and long lifetime resulting in a very compact and low maintenance solution. Harsh electrical environments are often found in modern industry. The UPS-1 is also compatible with generator Applications. A Battery Bank with runtime enough to transfer to generator with ATS are available.
How the ABB PCS 100 UPS-1 Works
High Efficiency Design design for Industrial UPS Applications
The PCS100 UPS-I uses a robust high-speed power electronic disconnect switch to connect the load to the utility. The modular inverter construction and fail-safe electromechanical bypass provides the highest system availability. Coupled with the small footprint and easy serviceability, this low maintenance, high efficiency industrial UPS is the solution for all power large facility and plant applications.
When the utility voltage is within a user defined range, the load is supplied directly by the utility. When a sag, surge or outage occurs, the PCS100 UPS-I immediately transfers the load onto its inverter and energy storage. When the utility voltage returns to within specification the PCS100 UPS-I will seamlessly transfer the load from the inverter back to the utility.

Voltage Regulator vs. UPS: What are my Choices?
The differences between AVR, AVC, and UPS mainly depend on the construct of your electrical loads, and the power issues you wish to correct.
Correcting Voltage Not Outages
Most Data Center Designed UPS Systems are built to withstand minutes if not longer of complete power absence. Being designed to make almost perfect power until it is not there, systems are designed with highly efficient inverter systems and other components. Loads on these systems are often constant, non-reactive loads, and low in-rush. These systems, however, does not perform well in an active load environment, high in-rush current environment, and do not take in large input windows of voltage and repair them.
